New to the real estate field, Carlos Luevanos already understands two concepts essential to success. If you have a mission that drives you, challenging circumstances can’t stop you.

Having completed a stint of decorated service in the US Navy, he recently joined RE/MAX Anacortes.

Carlos served six years on the most advanced and expensive Naval combat system in the world. In that time, he earned three Navy achievement medals while working on two ships.

“The pace was high tempo,” he says, citing his duty on the fifth-most deployed unit in the force. Four-month deployments were regularly extended to six and even eight months.

Why? The pandemic. If there were COVID-19 outbreaks in other units, Carlos’ team would work for longer periods.

The biggest challenge was not being able to travel home and see family, to recharge and refuel. “During a time that tested a lot of people, I learned the importance of working for the duration.”

From military man to broker

With four years of stellar service, Carlos earned off-base living privileges for his two additional years. And that’s how he walked into the real estate industry.

“Looking for places was fun,” he enthuses. Especially, around his base in southern Spain. Mediterranean beaches, gorgeous Moorish architecture, and delicious paella, anyone?

“As I looked for rentals, I talked to my broker about his career. I became interested in real estate, out of a sense of service: to make life easier for clients.”

Research leads to RE/MAX, naturally

When Carlos returned to his hometown of Anacortes, he knew he had a career direction. But he also needed to do a bit more research.

Luckily for us, Carlos had well-placed resources. Thank you, Kelli Lang! (Success does breed success.)

“Adam, Jay, and Jules—we all went to school together,” explains Carlos. He’s talking about a trio of successful buyer agents on Team Kelli Lang: Adam Baldwin (among Gateway’s Top 10 agents in 2021), Jay Kiesser, and Julien Collins (Gateway’s Rookie of the Year for 2021).

“Adam took the time to write about why RE/MAX is the brokerage for him,” says Carlos.

Still, Carlos was diligent, interviewing at other brokerages.

When he visited the Gateway office to talk with managing broker and owner Blake Boatman, Carlos was also greeted by experienced Realtor Karen Petersen. “Karen just happens to be my family’s broker!” Carlos explains. “When Karen told me ‘you have to come here,’ I knew I was home,” he laughs.

Knowing the market and what typical first years are like, Carlos is extraordinarily aware about making very reasonable buyer broker goals.

And beyond establishing a baseline? He has a calling for a specialty that connects his first career to his current one. “I’d like to be the broker, skilled at helping military families moving here (Naval Air Station Whidbey Island) and or moving out. Wherever their deployments take them.”

Because of his military time in Spain, Carlos also is proficient in speaking and reading Spanish. “Each Spanish dialect is different, in pronunciation and even pacing” he observes. “I feel lucky to have gained a second language, too.”

Here to serve

So, our hometown Anacortes hero not only served in the military but served overseas. Now, he’s back. Watching his Portland Trail Blazers. Taking in car shows—“I’m a car guy!” And he still loves to travel, only this time, with a home base.

You can reach Carlos at (360) 202-4727 and

“I’m happy to be here!” Carlos says, easily summing up why home in our Pacific Northwest is the most compelling place to be.
